Measuring children's feet correctly: How to find the right Sizeless shoe size

Children's feet grow quickly. Sometimes it feels like overnight. New shoes fit perfectly one day, and a few weeks later, they're already too tight at the toes. It's not always easy for parents to notice, as children often don't reliably feel if a shoe is pinching or too short. That's why regular measuring of their feet is so important.

In this article, we'll show you how to measure your child's feet correctly, how to tell if shoes are too small or too big, and how the Sizeless size chart, our size calculator, and our printable size guide can help you find the right size.

Why the right shoe size is so important for children

Children's feet are still soft, flexible, and developing. That's precisely why they need shoes that protect without restricting. A good children's shoe should leave room for the toes, not constrict the foot, and still fit securely.

The problem: The standard shoe size alone is often not enough. Depending on the manufacturer, model, and inner length, a shoe can fit differently. Therefore, the most important number is not "size 24, 25, or 26," but the actual foot length in millimeters.

At Sizeless, we make it deliberately easy for you: You measure your child's current foot length, enter it into our size calculator, or compare it with our size chart. The appropriate toe space is already taken into account in our size guide. So you don't have to add anything extra.

The dilemma of classic children's shoes

Children's feet are constantly growing. But classic children's shoes are not.

This repeatedly leads many parents into the same situation: If you buy shoes that fit perfectly, they often quickly become too small again. If you buy them bigger for future growth, the child will have them longer, but the shoe won't fit properly at first. The foot slips, there's no support, and the natural walking sensation suffers.

Normal children's shoes therefore often force parents into a compromise: either a precise fit or a longer period of use.

Sizeless was developed to solve exactly this dilemma. Our shoes can be continuously adjusted and can therefore always be adapted to your child's current foot. This means the shoe not only fits longer than a classic children's shoe with a fixed size, but also much more precisely because it grows with the foot.

What happens if children's shoes don't fit properly?

Ill-fitting shoes can hinder children when walking, playing, and running around. This doesn't just apply to shoes that are too small. Shoes that are too big can also be problematic.

If children's shoes are too small, the toes don't have enough room. Therefore, the foot cannot bend naturally, the toes are constricted, and pressure points or blisters can develop. Children often don't reliably notice this or don't say anything themselves. Some even unconsciously curl their toes when pressure builds up at the front. It is therefore difficult for parents to determine if a shoe still fits just by asking.

If children's shoes are too big, a different problem arises. The foot slides forward or to the side in the shoe. The child has to hold on unconsciously, often by gripping with their toes. This can make walking more unsteady. When running, climbing, or playing, the direct support that a good children's shoe should actually provide is missing.

The goal is therefore not to buy children's shoes as large as possible. Nor is it ideal to wear them until they noticeably pinch. What is crucial is a shoe that can be regularly adapted to the foot.

This is precisely the advantage of Sizeless: The shoe does not remain a fixed size. It can be continuously adjusted and thus always reset to your child's current foot length. This way, your child gets the space they need without struggling in a shoe that is too big.

Measuring children's feet correctly: Step by step

You only need a few minutes and, ideally, a quiet moment. Here's how to measure correctly:

1. Measure both feet

Children's feet are rarely exactly the same length. Therefore, always measure both the right and left foot. For size selection, the longer foot counts.

2. Measure standing up

Have your child stand upright barefoot or in thin socks. When standing, the foot is weighted and thus slightly longer than when sitting. This is the crucial length for shoes.

3. Mark heel and longest toe

The longest toe is not always the big toe. Therefore, mark the rearmost point of the heel and the foremost point of the longest toe.

4. Measure in millimeters

Measure the distance from the heel to the longest toe as precisely as possible in millimeters. Example: 156 mm.

5. Enter the value directly at Sizeless

Enter the measured value into our size calculator or compare it with our size chart. At Sizeless, the necessary movement and toe space is already included in our calculator. So please do not add anything extra "for future growth."

Sizeless Tip: Measure children's feet regularly. Especially with small children, a few millimeters of growth can make a noticeable difference.

The simplest method: our printable size template

If you don't want to measure with a ruler and paper, use our Sizeless printable size template.

Here's how it works:

  1. Download the template and print it at original size.
  2. IMPORTANT: Check the centimeter scale on the printout to ensure the scale is correct.
  3. Have your child stand barefoot on the template.
  4. Measure both feet.
  5. Read off the appropriate Sizeless size.

Size chart or size calculator: Which is better?

Both help you, but in different ways.

The size chart is ideal if you want a detailed overview of the shoes dimensions. Here you can find the total length and width of every sizeless shoe at the biggest and smallest size.

The size calculator is the easiest option: You enter your child's foot length in millimeters and immediately get our recommended size.

The size template is particularly practical if you want to ensure that you are really measuring correctly and do not have to transfer the value yourself.

Our tip: Use the template or measure carefully in millimeters. Afterwards, you can check the value in the size calculator. This way you are on the safe side.

Why Sizeless is particularly suitable for growing children's feet

Children's feet do not grow in fixed shoe sizes. They grow millimeter by millimeter. Classic children's shoes cannot reflect this: Either they fit perfectly, are soon too small, or are deliberately bought larger.

Sizeless takes a different approach.

Our children's shoes can be continuously adjusted in length. You can change the size using two side tabs and thus adjust the shoe to your child's current foot. The shoe grows up to 8 mm - which corresponds to more than one additional shoe size.

In addition, there are features that are particularly important for active children:

  • Wide toe box for natural toe freedom
  • Thin, flexible sole for a natural walking feeling
  • Zero drop for a barefoot-like feel
  • Velcro closure for quick on and off
  • Size adjustment in a few seconds
  • Vegan materials
  • Production in Portugal

This gives your child a shoe that not only fits longer, but can also be flexibly adapted to everyday life. For the playground, daycare, walks, and all the little adventures where children's feet learn new things every day.

FAQ Section

How do I measure children's feet correctly?

It's best to measure both feet while standing, barefoot or in thin socks. Mark the heel and the longest toe, and measure the distance in millimeters. For size selection, the longer foot counts.

Do I need to add extra space for Sizeless?

No. At Sizeless, movement and toe space are already accounted for in the size calculator and size template. Simply measure your child's actual foot length.

Why isn't the normal shoe size sufficient?

Shoe sizes can vary depending on the manufacturer and model. What's crucial is the actual inner length and how the shoe fits the foot. That's why measuring in millimeters is more accurate.

Which is better: size chart, size calculator, or template?

The size calculator is the most convenient, the size chart gives you a detailed overview, and the printable size template helps you measure accurately at home. The safest approach is: measure, check the value, and choose the appropriate Sizeless size.

How often should I measure children's feet?

Especially with small children, you should remeasure regularly, at least every three months and always before buying new shoes. If your child is currently experiencing a growth spurt, a shorter interval is also worthwhile.
